Description
Hexham in Northumberland is known for its ancient abbey, whose pale tower rises above clustered town roofs and mature trees beneath the green fields of the surrounding Tyne valley countryside.
The abbey at Hexham began with land granted to Bishop Wilfrid in 673 or 674. Re-established as an Augustinian priory in 1113, it gained its chancel, transepts and tower during the following century, anchoring the Northumberland town in a long religious history.
An elevated view crosses red and grey rooftops towards the broad abbey church. Its square tower and tall windows stand out among leafy trees, with substantial pale stone buildings to the right. Fields climb the wooded hills behind the town. Full green crowns suggest summer, and clear sunlight warms the roofs beneath large white clouds.
