Hibiscus and Egret - Jiang Tingxi

This work by Jiang Tingxi, a scholar-official and painter active during the Qing Dynasty, exemplifies the traditional bird-and-flower genre. The composition features a solitary egret positioned at the base of a large hibiscus plant. The artist employs a delicate ink wash technique to define the plumage of the bird and the structure of the branches, while the blossoms are rendered with subtle tonal variations to suggest volume and texture against the darker background.

Jiang Tingxi was known for his technical precision and his role within the imperial court, where he served as a high-ranking official and editor of the encyclopaedic 'Gujin Tushu Jicheng'. His approach to painting often balanced academic rigour with the expressive qualities of the literati tradition. The vertical orientation of the silk scroll allows for a graceful arrangement of the hibiscus stems, which rise from the lower left to fill the upper portion of the frame. The egret, a common motif in Chinese art, is depicted with a sense of quiet observation, its form anchored firmly in the lower foreground.
