A documentary photograph by Théodore van Lelyveld depicting the town of Corte, Corsica, with figures working in the fields below.
This gelatin silver print by Théodore van Lelyveld captures the rugged topography of Corte, Corsica, at the turn of the twentieth century. The composition focuses on the town, which is perched atop a rocky outcrop, demonstrating the traditional Mediterranean approach to settlement where dwellings are integrated into the natural stone formations. Below the elevated town, the foreground shows agricultural activity, with figures working the land. This juxtaposition of domestic architecture and rural labour provides a clear view of the socio-economic conditions of the region during this period.
Van Lelyveld, a Dutch photographer and ethnographer, often travelled to document the customs and environments of various cultures. His approach here is observational, prioritising the relationship between the built environment and the surrounding terrain. The image is presented as a mounted photograph on grid paper, a common practice for archival documentation during the early 1900s. The tonal range of the print is restrained, focusing on the grey and sepia hues typical of early photographic processes. The clarity of the structures against the hillside allows for an examination of the vernacular architecture, which remains largely unchanged in its fundamental form. This work functions as a historical record of Corsican life, capturing a moment of quiet industry in a remote setting. The inclusion of the grid-lined mount provides a sense of the original context in which such photographs were stored, often as part of larger ethnographic collections or personal travel journals. The print offers a glimpse into the daily rhythms of the island, far removed from the urban centres of mainland Europe.
