Description
A 1917 Shin-hanga woodblock print by Itō Shinsui, capturing the atmospheric landscape of Mount Hira and Lake Biwa with refined colour gradients.
This woodblock print by Itō Shinsui depicts the snowy peaks of Mount Hira, a subject traditionally associated with the Eight Views of Lake Biwa. Produced in 1917, the work reflects the Shin-hanga movement, which sought to revitalise traditional Japanese printmaking by incorporating Western techniques of light, shadow, and atmospheric perspective while maintaining the collaborative production model of the Edo period. The composition is divided into three distinct horizontal zones. In the foreground, reeds sway in the wind against the water, rendered with fine, rhythmic lines that suggest movement. The middle ground features the expansive surface of Lake Biwa, captured in muted, earthy tones. The background is dominated by the dark, imposing silhouette of the Hira mountains under a heavy, overcast sky. Shinsui uses subtle colour gradients to convey the chill of the air and the weight of the clouds, moving away from the flat colour planes typical of earlier Ukiyo-e prints. Shinsui was a student of Kaburagi Kiyokata and became a prominent figure in the 20th-century print world. His approach to this series demonstrates a careful balance between observation and stylisation. The print captures a specific meteorological moment, focusing on the interplay between the water and the mountain range. The technical execution, particularly the handling of the wood grain and the application of ink, results in a textured surface that adds depth to the scene. This print is a representative example of the Shin-hanga aesthetic, where the artist acts as a designer overseeing the skilled carvers and printers who translate the initial sketch into a final, multi-layered image.
