A refined surimono woodblock print by Totoya Hokkei, depicting figures at the historic Hoshinoi Well in Kamakura.
This woodblock print by Totoya Hokkei belongs to the genre of surimono, which were privately commissioned prints often exchanged among poets and artists. Hokkei, a student of Katsushika Hokusai, adopted his master's attention to detail while maintaining a distinct, refined aesthetic. The work depicts a scene from the 'History of Kamakura', specifically focusing on visitors approaching the Hoshinoi Well.
The composition features three figures: a child in a patterned kimono, a woman, and a man carrying a load on a shoulder pole. The figures are rendered with delicate lines and a muted colour palette, characteristic of the high-quality paper and pigments used in surimono production. The inclusion of calligraphic text at the top of the print provides context, linking the visual narrative to the literary traditions of the period. The figures are positioned against a sparse background, allowing the focus to remain on their attire and the subtle interaction between them.
Hokkei demonstrates his technical skill through the precise registration of the woodblocks, ensuring that the patterns on the kimonos and the textures of the clothing remain clear. The print captures a quiet, everyday moment, elevated by the artistic conventions of the Edo period. The Hoshinoi Well, a site of historical interest in Kamakura, is indicated by a simple wooden sign, grounding the scene in a specific location. This print offers a glimpse into the cultural practices of the time, where art, poetry, and local history intersected in the form of these small, collectible works. The balanced composition and the restrained use of colour reflect the sophisticated tastes of the patrons who commissioned such pieces for private circulation.
