This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicts the fourth station of the Tokaido road, Hodogaya. The Tokaido was the primary route connecting Edo, modern-day Tokyo, with Kyoto. Hokusai produced this series early in his career, focusing on the daily activities of travellers and the specific geography of the route.

The composition features a group of figures in the foreground, including a traveller mounted on a horse and two pedestrians engaged in conversation. The scene is framed by simple, thatched-roof structures, which suggest the rural character of the station at the time. Hokusai employs a clear, graphic style, using distinct outlines and a restrained colour palette to define the figures and the surrounding environment.

The background is marked by stylised, horizontal bands of pink clouds, a common convention in Japanese printmaking of the period to indicate distance and atmospheric depth. Beyond the immediate foreground, a bridge spans a body of water, leading the eye toward the distant hills. The print captures a moment of transit, reflecting the transient nature of life on the road that defined the Ukiyo-e genre.

Unlike the later, more famous series by Utagawa Hiroshige on the same subject, Hokusai’s interpretation of the Tokaido stations is characterised by a focus on human interaction and the modest scale of the architecture. The print demonstrates the artist's early mastery of woodblock techniques, balancing the arrangement of figures with the natural features of the terrain. This work provides a view into the historical travel culture of Edo-period Japan, documenting the rhythm of movement between the major urban centres of the time.
