A classic woodblock print from Hiroshige's Tōkaidō series, depicting travellers crossing the Shinkame Bridge at the Hodogaya station.
This woodblock print is part of the series The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō, a collection documenting the route between Edo and Kyoto. Utagawa Hiroshige captures the fifth station, Hodogaya, with a focus on the Shinkame Bridge. The composition draws the eye across the arched wooden structure, where travellers are depicted in transit, their figures rendered with simple, effective lines.
The scene balances architectural elements with the natural environment. To the left, a large, prominent tree anchors the foreground, providing a vertical counterpoint to the horizontal sweep of the bridge and the thatched-roof buildings. The background features a gentle, rounded hill, rendered in soft, muted tones that suggest the quiet atmosphere of the rural stop. Hiroshige employs a controlled colour palette, using shades of blue for the water and sky, contrasted with the earthy browns and ochres of the buildings and bridge.
Technically, the print demonstrates the precision of the Ukiyo-e process. The registration of the blocks allows for clean borders between the water and the land, while the subtle gradations in the sky indicate the skill involved in the printing process. The work provides a glimpse into the daily life of travellers during the Edo period, capturing a moment of rest and movement within the broader journey. The perspective is managed through the placement of the bridge, which guides the viewer into the village, creating a sense of depth without relying on Western linear techniques. This print remains a representative example of Hiroshige's ability to imbue topographical subjects with a distinct sense of place and atmosphere.
