A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by William Faithorne the Elder, depicting the Holy Family in a classical, serene setting.
This engraving by William Faithorne the Elder depicts the Holy Family in a classical setting. Faithorne, a prominent British engraver of the seventeenth century, was known for his technical precision and his ability to translate the tonal qualities of painting into the medium of line engraving. The composition features the Virgin Mary seated with the Christ Child on her lap, while the young Saint John the Baptist stands beside them, holding a cross-staff. Saint Joseph is positioned behind them, observing the scene.
The figures are arranged against a backdrop of stone ruins and a large tree, which provides a sense of depth and structure to the scene. The inclusion of a lamb, a traditional symbol of Christ, reinforces the religious narrative. The Latin inscription at the base, taken from the Song of Solomon, translates to 'As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons.' This text adds a layer of theological meaning to the visual representation.
Faithorne demonstrates his mastery of the burin through the varied textures of the drapery, the foliage, and the weathered stone. The lighting is balanced, creating a clear distinction between the foreground figures and the distant, hazy horizon. The work reflects the influence of continental European printmaking, which Faithorne studied during his time in Paris. His approach to cross-hatching and line weight allows for a subtle gradation of tone, giving the figures a sculptural quality. This print is a representative example of the high level of craftsmanship found in seventeenth-century English print culture, where the reproduction of religious subjects was a common practice for both devotional and decorative purposes.
