Horace Pippin's 'Holy Mountain II' depicts a peaceful scene of animals and figures in a dark forest, inspired by Isaiah 11:6-9. The painting's simplified forms and use of colour create a dreamlike quality.
Horace Pippin (1888-1946) was an American self-taught folk painter. He began painting relatively late in life, after an injury sustained during World War I limited the use of his right arm. Pippin is known for his depictions of historical and biblical scenes, as well as genre scenes of African-American life. His style is characterised by its flat perspective, simplified forms, and use of colour to create mood and narrative. 'Holy Mountain II' presents a scene inspired by Isaiah 11:6-9, envisioning a world of peace and harmony among all creatures. The composition is divided into a dark forest background and a foreground populated with various animals and figures. The animals, including lions, lambs, leopards, and cows, are rendered in a simplified, almost childlike manner. Small white flowers or stars dot the scene, adding a touch of whimsy and wonder. Two human figures, one in white and the other in yellow, appear to be tending to the animals, reinforcing the theme of peaceful coexistence. The dark palette and naive style contribute to the painting's dreamlike quality.
