A detailed 17th-century engraving by Lucas Vorsterman I, capturing the dramatic encounter of the holy women at the tomb of Christ.
This engraving by Lucas Vorsterman I depicts the biblical scene of the holy women arriving at the tomb of Christ. Vorsterman, a skilled printmaker who collaborated closely with Peter Paul Rubens, demonstrates his mastery of the burin through the precise rendering of drapery and the subtle modulation of light. The composition follows the dramatic conventions of the Flemish Baroque, where figures are arranged to guide the viewer through the narrative sequence.
On the left, two figures stand upon a raised platform, their forms illuminated by a radiant light source that emanates from behind them. This light spills across the scene, catching the folds of the garments worn by the women on the right. The women appear in various states of reaction, their expressions and postures conveying a sense of solemnity and wonder. Vorsterman employs a system of hatching and cross-hatching to create depth and volume, ensuring that the figures possess a tangible presence within the architectural setting of the tomb.
The print reflects the collaborative nature of the Antwerp print trade during the seventeenth century, where artists often translated the painterly compositions of masters into reproducible media. Vorsterman was one of the most capable engravers of his generation, known for his ability to capture the muscularity and movement characteristic of the Rubensian style. The inclusion of Latin text at the base of the print provides context for the scene, identifying the figures and the donors associated with the commission. This work serves as an example of the technical rigour applied to religious subjects, where the clarity of the line is used to articulate both the physical form and the spiritual weight of the narrative. The balance between the dark, cavernous background and the illuminated foreground figures creates a sense of theatricality, typical of the period.
