A 1620 engraving by Lucas Vorsterman I, based on a composition by Peter Paul Rubens, depicting the biblical flight of Lot and his family from Sodom.
This engraving by Lucas Vorsterman I, dated 1620, depicts the biblical narrative of Lot and his family fleeing the city of Sodom. The composition is based on a painting by Peter Paul Rubens, with whom Vorsterman collaborated closely during his time in Antwerp. The scene captures the moment an angel guides the family away from the impending destruction, a subject that allowed for the dramatic use of light and shadow characteristic of the Baroque period.
Vorsterman demonstrates technical mastery in his handling of the burin. The figures are rendered with a sense of movement, their garments depicted through varied line weights that suggest volume and texture. Lot occupies the centre of the group, his expression conveying the gravity of the situation, while the angel gestures towards the path ahead. The inclusion of a small dog at the lower right adds a touch of domestic realism to the otherwise monumental narrative. The background remains relatively sparse, allowing the focus to remain on the interaction between the divine messenger and the mortal family.
As a printmaker, Vorsterman was highly regarded for his ability to translate the painterly qualities of Rubens into the medium of engraving. This work reflects the collaborative nature of the Antwerp print trade, where artists and engravers worked in tandem to disseminate compositions to a wider audience. The Latin inscription at the base provides context regarding the dedication and the provenance of the original design. The print serves as an example of the high level of craftsmanship achieved by Flemish engravers in the early seventeenth century, balancing anatomical accuracy with the emotional intensity required by the subject matter.
