Josef Albers' 'Homage to the Square: La Tehuana' is an abstract exploration of colour perception, featuring nested squares in yellow, pink, and orange. This work exemplifies Albers' theories on how colours interact and influence one another.
Josef Albers, a German-American artist and educator (1888-1976), is best known for his abstract works, particularly his series 'Homage to the Square'. This series, which he began in 1949 and continued until his death, explores the subjective experience of colour perception. Albers believed that colour is never seen in isolation; it is always affected by its surrounding colours. 'Homage to the Square' is not about geometric shapes, but about the interaction of colours and how they affect one another. Each painting in the series consists of three or four squares of different colours, nested within each other. The squares are typically painted with a palette knife, creating a slightly textured surface that adds to the visual interest. 'Homage to the Square: La Tehuana' features a composition of nested squares in shades of yellow, pink, and orange. The colours are carefully chosen to create a sense of depth and luminosity. The interaction of the colours creates a visual vibration, as the eye attempts to reconcile the different hues. The painting is a testament to Albers' belief that colour is a constantly changing and subjective experience.
