A 1917 pastel study by American Impressionist Childe Hassam, depicting the historic "Home Sweet Home" cottage in Easthampton with expressive, gestural lines.
Childe Hassam, a central figure in the American Impressionist movement, produced this study of the historic "Home Sweet Home" cottage in Easthampton, New York, in 1917. The work captures the weathered shingle exterior of the structure, which is famously associated with John Howard Payne, the author of the song of the same name. Hassam employs a technique that relies on the warm, mid-tone ground of the paper to provide a base for his application of pastel.
The composition focuses on the geometric form of the cottage, with its rhythmic arrangement of windows and shutters. Hassam uses quick, energetic marks to define the architectural features, allowing the texture of the paper to show through in areas of shadow and light. The foliage in the foreground is rendered with loose, gestural strokes, providing a contrast to the structured lines of the building. His use of colour is selective, employing touches of blue and green to suggest the surrounding environment, while the cottage itself remains grounded in earthy, neutral tones.
This piece reflects Hassam's interest in the colonial architecture of New England, a subject he returned to frequently during his time in the region. By choosing to work in pastel, he achieves a sense of immediacy and spontaneity that differs from his more formal oil paintings. The work functions as both a record of a specific site and an exploration of light falling across a textured surface. It demonstrates his ability to balance representational accuracy with the expressive qualities of his chosen medium. The signature and date are visible in the lower left corner, confirming its place within his mature body of work.
