A sixteenth-century engraving by Abraham de Bruyn depicting a Hungarian horseman and a Polish nobleman, showcasing period costume and military attire.
This engraving by Abraham de Bruyn presents a study of European military and aristocratic attire during the late sixteenth century. The work features two distinct figures: a Hungarian horseman, depicted in full profile within an ornate rectangular frame, and a Polish nobleman, whose image is partially preserved through fragments of the original print. The Hungarian figure is shown mounted, carrying a lance, with the Latin inscription 'Vulgaris Hungarus' and the German text 'Die gemeine Ungerische reuter' identifying his status and origin. The Polish figure is labelled 'Nobilis Polonus'.
De Bruyn, a prolific engraver based in Antwerp, produced numerous series documenting the diverse fashions and social hierarchies of the period. His work is characterised by precise line work and a focus on the material details of clothing, such as the feathered headgear and decorative textiles worn by the subjects. The composition reflects the contemporary interest in ethnographic and costume studies, which were popular among collectors and scholars of the era. The print provides a glimpse into the visual culture of the sixteenth century, where the depiction of foreign dress served as a means of categorising and understanding the wider European world.
This specific impression shows signs of age, with significant paper loss that reveals the fragile nature of sixteenth-century prints. The remaining sections demonstrate the technical skill of the engraver, particularly in the rendering of the horseman's armour and the decorative border surrounding the primary image. The work is a valuable example of the printmaking traditions that flourished in the Low Countries, where the dissemination of such images helped to standardise the visual representation of different national identities across the continent.
