An eighteenth-century engraving by Johann Sebastian Klauber depicting a Māori warrior in profile, showcasing traditional moko and attire.
This engraving, titled Hoofd van een Krijgsman uit Nieuw-Zeeland, depicts a Māori warrior in profile. The work is attributed to the German engraver Johann Sebastian Klauber, who produced this plate for a larger publication documenting global cultures and ethnographic studies common in the late eighteenth century. The subject is shown with traditional facial moko, which is rendered with precise, fine lines that follow the contours of the face. The warrior wears a cloak and an ear ornament, with a hair comb visible in his topknot. The background is kept simple, focusing the viewer on the individual features and the cultural markers presented in the portrait.
Klauber utilised the techniques of etching and engraving to achieve a range of tonal values, from the deep shadows of the hair to the lighter, cross-hatched areas of the skin and clothing. The composition is formal, adhering to the conventions of European portraiture of the period, which sought to document the physical appearance of indigenous peoples encountered during the era of Pacific exploration. The text at the bottom, Hoofd van een Krijgsman uit Nieuw-Zeeland, identifies the subject as a leader or warrior from New Zealand. This print provides a window into how European audiences of the late eighteenth century engaged with visual records of Māori culture. The work is a specimen of the period's interest in taxonomy and the documentation of human diversity. It remains a significant example of how printmaking was used to disseminate information about distant lands and their inhabitants to a European public.
