A witty ink illustration by Dutch cartoonist Peter van Straaten, capturing a humorous moment of hay fever in a rustic setting.
Peter van Straaten was a Dutch cartoonist and illustrator known for his observational humour and sharp social commentary. This work, titled Hooikoorts (Hay Fever), displays his characteristic line work and ability to capture human absurdity within a single frame. The scene depicts a couple in a hayloft, interrupted by a sudden, comical sneeze, which provides the title for the piece.
Van Straaten employs a loose, expressive ink style. He uses varying line weights to define the texture of the hay and the figures, creating a sense of movement and spontaneity. The composition is structured around the contrast between the intimate, private moment of the couple and the intrusion of the external environment, represented by the horse, the bird, and the startled figure in the background. His work often focused on the mundane aspects of daily life, transforming ordinary situations into humorous narratives through subtle facial expressions and body language.
This print captures the essence of his style, which relies on minimal detail to convey a complete story. The cross-hatching and quick, gestural strokes demonstrate his technical proficiency as a draughtsman. Van Straaten worked for many years for the Dutch newspaper de Volkskrant, where his daily cartoons became a staple of Dutch cultural life. His approach to drawing was direct, avoiding unnecessary ornamentation to ensure the narrative remained the primary focus. The work is a fine example of his ability to blend visual storytelling with a dry, witty sensibility, making it a representative piece of his extensive body of work.
