Description
Hornby looks towards a castellated Lancashire house above the Wenning, where green parkland, grazing cattle and a foaming weir bring the village's river and medieval heritage together.
In Lancashire's Lune Valley, Hornby Castle stands over a bend in the River Wenning east of the village. Developed from a medieval stronghold, the present country house is largely nineteenth-century, although its tower preserves work from the thirteenth and sixteenth centuries.
Across a smooth river pool, a castellated house rises between broad green trees. Cattle graze in the open parkland beneath it, their small dark-and-white shapes giving scale to the grounds. A curved weir sends white water across the foreground. Full foliage and warm cream clouds suggest summer light, with the moving water contrasting sharply against the still reflections above the drop.
