A dynamic study of a horse and dog by Franz Marc, featuring geometric forms and a symbolic colour palette typical of his Expressionist period.
Franz Marc, a founding member of Der Blaue Reiter, produced this work during a period of intense experimentation with colour theory and form. The composition features a large, blue horse rendered in geometric planes, positioned behind a smaller, earth-toned dog. Marc often assigned symbolic meanings to colours, with blue representing masculinity and spirituality, while the warmer tones of the dog suggest a grounded, earthly presence.
The drawing demonstrates the influence of Cubism and Futurism on Marc's practice. He breaks the animal figures into angular, overlapping facets, which creates a sense of movement and energy. The lines are fluid and calligraphic, guiding the eye across the surface while maintaining a balance between the representational subjects and the abstract structure of the background. The use of negative space and the interplay of light and shadow suggest a unity between the animals and their environment.
This piece reflects the artist's desire to capture the essence of his subjects rather than their literal appearance. By simplifying the anatomy of the horse and dog into rhythmic shapes, Marc achieves a synthesis of form. The work is characteristic of his pre-war output, where he sought to express a harmonious connection between nature and the spiritual realm. The application of watercolour is controlled, allowing the ink lines to define the boundaries of the colour fields. This print captures the delicate balance of the original medium, preserving the texture of the paper and the transparency of the pigments. It is a clear example of the stylistic shift occurring in early twentieth-century German art, moving away from traditional realism toward a more subjective and emotive visual language.
