Marc sought to depict animals, particularly horses, as symbols of purity and innocence, untainted by the corrupting influence of humanity.
In 1911, Marc co-founded Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) with Wassily Kandinsky, a pivotal group that championed abstract art and spiritual expression. This collective fostered an environment of experimentation and collaboration, pushing the boundaries of modern art. Key works such as "The Large Blue Horses" and "Fighting Forms" exemplify Marc's distinctive style, characterised by bold colours, simplified forms, and a deep sense of empathy for the animal kingdom.
