A pioneer of abstract art, Wassily Kandinsky's 'Horses' depicts horses and riders in a loose, dreamlike manner. The simplified forms and muted colours create a sense of ethereal movement.
Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) was a Russian painter and art theorist, credited as a pioneer of abstract art. His move towards abstraction occurred gradually; early works retained recognisable forms, which later dissolved into pure colour and shape. Kandinsky believed that abstract art could express deep spiritual feelings, just as music could. He explored this connection in his theoretical writings, particularly Concerning the Spiritual in Art (1911). He taught at the Bauhaus school in Germany from 1922 until its closure by the Nazis in 1933, after which he lived in France until his death. 'Horses' exemplifies Kandinsky's early experiments with abstraction. The painting depicts several horses and riders in a loose, dreamlike manner. The forms are simplified and the colours are muted, creating a sense of ethereal movement. The composition is dynamic, with swirling lines and overlapping shapes that suggest a scene in constant flux. The palette consists of soft pinks, blues, and yellows, with touches of black and red to provide contrast. The brushwork is loose and expressive, adding to the overall sense of spontaneity and freedom.
