A classic sumi-e ink painting by Shinno Noami depicting the Zen monk Hōtei gesturing towards the moon.
This work depicts Hōtei, the eccentric Zen monk, in a moment of quiet contemplation. Attributed to the Muromachi period artist Shinno Noami, the composition follows the traditional ink wash style, known as sumi-e. The figure of Hōtei is rendered with economical brushwork, focusing on the gesture of his hand as he points towards the moon. The artist uses varying densities of ink to suggest the folds of the monk's robes and the subtle curve of his posture.
The subject matter draws from Zen Buddhist iconography. Hōtei is often associated with contentment and the release of worldly attachments. By pointing to the moon, the figure directs the viewer's attention away from the finger itself, a common metaphor in Zen teachings regarding the nature of truth and the limitations of language. The negative space surrounding the figure is intentional, allowing the viewer to focus on the simplicity of the act.
Noami was a prominent figure in the cultural life of the Ashikaga shogunate, serving as an aesthetic advisor and connoisseur. His work reflects the influence of Chinese Song and Yuan dynasty painting, which was highly regarded in Japan during this era. The brushstrokes are fluid and direct, characteristic of the Zen aesthetic that values spontaneity and the capture of a singular moment. The muted tones of the ink on aged paper provide a sense of timelessness, consistent with the meditative quality of the subject. This print captures the original tonal variations and the delicate handling of the ink wash, preserving the balance between the figure and the expansive, empty space of the background.
