A rhythmic abstract composition by František Kupka, exploring the passage of time through layered, translucent planes and a warm, tonal palette.
František Kupka, a pioneer of non-representational painting, created this work during a period of intense experimentation with the mechanics of light and temporal perception. Known as 'Hour' or 'The Clock', this composition moves away from literal depiction, favouring a rhythmic arrangement of colour and form. Kupka, who spent much of his career in Paris, was deeply engaged with the scientific and philosophical inquiries of the early twentieth century. His approach often involved the translation of musical or temporal concepts into visual language.
The painting features a series of overlapping, translucent planes that suggest a circular or rotational movement. The palette is dominated by warm ochres, creams, and browns, which provide a neutral ground for the sharper accents of orange, violet, and deep blue. These chromatic choices guide the eye across the surface, creating a sense of shifting light rather than a static object. The brushwork is deliberate, with thin glazes layered to build depth without relying on traditional perspective.
Kupka's work during the 1920s often explored the idea of the 'fourth dimension', attempting to capture the passage of time through the layering of geometric shapes. In this piece, the forms appear to expand and contract, mimicking the rhythmic ticking or the cyclical nature of a clock. The composition avoids rigid geometry, opting instead for organic, flowing curves that suggest motion. By stripping away recognisable subjects, Kupka invites the viewer to engage with the painting as a sensory experience. This print captures the subtle tonal transitions of the original oil on canvas, maintaining the balance between the muted background and the concentrated bursts of colour. It is an example of the artist's ability to synthesise complex theoretical ideas into a cohesive, visual form.
