A detailed etching by John Sell Cotman documenting the ornate architecture of a historic building in Rouen, France, from his Architectural Antiquities of Normandy series.
This etching by John Sell Cotman depicts the ornate facade of a historic building in the Place de la Pucelle, Rouen. It was produced for his two-volume publication, Architectural Antiquities of Normandy, which documented the medieval and Renaissance structures of the region. Cotman, a member of the Norwich School of painters, travelled to France on three occasions between 1817 and 1820 to gather material for this project.
The composition focuses on the verticality of the structure, capturing the dense sculptural relief that adorns the exterior walls. Cotman employs a precise, linear technique to render the stone carvings, window frames, and architectural mouldings. The work reflects the period interest in antiquarianism and the documentation of European heritage. By choosing to depict the building in a state of daily use, with small figures positioned near the entrance, Cotman provides a sense of scale and context to the architectural form.
As an etcher, Cotman demonstrates a high degree of control over his medium. The lines are clean and deliberate, allowing the viewer to examine the decorative motifs without distraction. The play of light and shadow across the facade is achieved through varied hatching techniques, which define the depth of the carvings and the recession of the windows. This print serves as a record of the building as it appeared in the early nineteenth century, offering a clear view of the craftsmanship involved in its construction. The work is representative of the technical rigour Cotman applied to his topographical studies, prioritising clarity and accuracy in his representation of historical sites.
