George Luks, a member of the group known as The Eight and later associated with the Ashcan School, is primarily recognised for his gritty depictions of urban life in New York. However, his work in watercolour reveals a different facet of his practice. This piece, House on the Point, demonstrates his ability to capture atmospheric conditions through fluid, expressive brushwork and a bold, non-naturalistic use of colour.

The composition is dominated by a heavy, dark structure perched upon a coastal promontory. Luks employs deep blues and purples to define the house and the surrounding terrain, creating a sense of isolation against the lighter, pale yellow horizon.
