A classic Impressionist study of the Palace of Westminster, capturing the atmospheric light and hazy sunset over the River Thames.
Claude Monet painted this work during his extended stays in London between 1899 and 1901, though he continued to refine the series in his Giverny studio until 1903. The composition captures the iconic silhouette of the Palace of Westminster as seen from the south bank of the River Thames. Monet focused on the atmospheric conditions of the London fog, which he famously described as the element that gave the city its marvellous appearance.
The painting is defined by a monochromatic colour scheme dominated by deep purples, violets, and fiery oranges. The sun appears as a glowing, hazy disc, struggling to penetrate the thick, humid air. Monet applied paint in short, rapid strokes, building up the surface texture to convey the shifting light and the density of the smog. The architecture of the Parliament building is reduced to a dark, looming mass, stripped of its gothic detail to function as a formal shape against the sky and water.
This work belongs to a larger series where Monet explored the same subject under varying weather and light conditions. By repeating the motif, he shifted the focus from the physical structure of the building to the transient effects of light on the atmosphere. The reflection of the sunset on the water creates a sense of symmetry, grounding the ethereal sky. This piece demonstrates the artist's preoccupation with the optical experience of a scene rather than its literal representation. The lack of clear boundaries between the sky, the building, and the river creates a unified, immersive visual field that is characteristic of his later period.
