An isometric construction scheme by Walter Gropius, detailing the modular building methods used for the Dessau-Törten housing estate in the 1920s.
This isometric construction scheme illustrates the rationalised building methods employed by Walter Gropius during the development of the Dessau-Törten housing estate. Commissioned by the city of Dessau, the project aimed to provide affordable, mass-produced housing for workers. Gropius utilised industrial techniques, such as pre-fabricated concrete components, to increase efficiency and reduce costs on the building site.
The drawing presents a clear, technical view of the structural assembly. By using an isometric projection, Gropius allows the viewer to understand the spatial arrangement and the relationship between the load-bearing walls and the interior volumes. The use of colour is functional rather than decorative: black indicates solid mass or shadow, yellow highlights internal surfaces, and grey defines the structural frame. This visual language aligns with the Bauhaus objective of merging aesthetic clarity with industrial utility.
As an architectural document, the work captures the transition towards modernism in the 1920s. It reflects the shift from traditional masonry construction to the assembly of modular parts. The Dessau-Törten project remains a primary example of the attempt to solve the housing crisis through systematic design and standardisation. This print offers a view into the methodology of one of the twentieth century's most influential architects, documenting the precise planning required to execute large-scale social housing projects during the Weimar Republic.
