Description
Howden in East Yorkshire gathers around a medieval minster, whose tall stone tower rises above the town’s trees and roofs, giving this inland settlement a distinctive landmark.
The minster at Howden combines a working church with the ruins of its medieval eastern buildings. In the East Riding of Yorkshire, the surviving church stands beside an elaborately decorated fourteenth-century chancel and chapter house, now cared for by English Heritage.
Its pale tower rises above a dense belt of trees, with tall Gothic windows catching warm light. A green roof extends left, while red brick buildings and a clock tower punctuate the right skyline. Below, a dark-framed pavilion faces an open lawn. Long tree shadows and full foliage suggest a quiet summer afternoon beneath broken white clouds and a clear blue sky.
