A Mughal miniature painting by Lal depicting Hulagu Khan at a formal feast, rendered in opaque watercolour and gold on paper.
This miniature painting originates from the Jami al-tavarikh, or Compendium of Chronicles, a historical work commissioned during the reign of the Mughal Emperor Akbar. The artist, Lal, was a member of the imperial workshop and is known for his contributions to several major manuscripts of the period. The scene depicts Hulagu Khan, the Mongol ruler, presiding over a formal gathering. He sits elevated upon a dais, gesturing towards his guests, while amirs and princes are arranged in a structured formation around him. The composition employs a high viewpoint, allowing the viewer to observe the interior of the tent and the surrounding activity simultaneously.
The work displays the characteristic synthesis of Persian and Indian artistic traditions that defined the Mughal style under Akbar. The figures are rendered with precise detail, from the varied colours of their robes to the specific patterns on the textiles. The use of gold leaf adds a sense of opulence to the scene, reflecting the status of the historical figures depicted. The inclusion of Persian calligraphy within the composition integrates the text directly into the visual narrative, a common practice in manuscript illumination of this era. The architectural elements, such as the tent structure and the dais, provide a clear spatial framework for the assembly. The artist balances the crowded scene by using distinct groupings of figures, which guides the eye across the page. This piece is an example of the high level of technical skill maintained by the imperial atelier, where artists collaborated to produce works of historical and artistic merit.
