A detailed eighteenth-century botanical study of a white hyacinth, rendered in gouache and watercolour by German artist Hendrik Budde.
This botanical study by Hendrik Budde depicts a specific cultivar of hyacinth, named in honour of the Margrave Charles of Baden-Durlach. Budde, a German artist active during the early eighteenth century, produced this work with a focus on scientific precision and aesthetic clarity. The composition is set against a cool, grey-blue background, which allows the white petals of the flower to emerge with distinct luminosity.
Budde employs a combination of gouache and watercolour to capture the texture of the hyacinth. The petals are rendered with fine, layered brushwork, suggesting the dense, ruffled quality of the bloom. The leaves, extending from the base in a radial pattern, show subtle variations in green, providing a grounded contrast to the verticality of the flower spike. The artist uses white highlights to define the edges of the petals, creating a sense of volume and form that is characteristic of the period's botanical documentation.
The work reflects the eighteenth-century interest in horticulture and the classification of rare plant varieties. Such illustrations were often commissioned by nobility to document the contents of their private gardens or to celebrate new specimens. Budde's signature is visible in the lower right corner, confirming his authorship of this detailed specimen study. The work remains a clear example of the technical skill required for botanical recording before the advent of photography, where the artist had to balance artistic interpretation with the need for accurate representation of the plant's morphology. The muted palette and the controlled application of pigment ensure that the focus remains entirely on the structure of the hyacinth itself, presented here as a singular, dignified subject.
