A 1794 woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku featuring the kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjuro VI in a character role.
This woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku depicts the kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjuro VI in the role of Funa Bansaku. Produced in 1794, the work belongs to a brief but intense period of activity for the artist, who created approximately 140 portraits of kabuki actors within a single year. Sharaku is known for his departure from the idealised depictions common in the ukiyo-e genre of the time. Instead, he employed a style that emphasised the specific physical traits and psychological intensity of the performers.
The composition presents the actor in a standing posture, wearing a patterned kimono with a prominent leaf-like motif. The figure holds a sword, a common prop in the dramatic narratives of the kabuki theatre. The artist uses bold, confident lines to define the actor's features, particularly the nose and the set of the mouth, which contribute to the character's stern expression. The background is a flat, neutral tone, which directs the viewer's attention entirely to the figure and his elaborate costume.
Sharaku's approach to portraiture often involved a degree of caricature, which allowed him to capture the essence of the actor's stage persona. This print demonstrates his ability to balance decorative elements, such as the repeating patterns on the garment, with the stark realism of the facial features. The use of colour is restrained, relying on a palette of muted ochre, soft red, and black ink to create a sense of balance. This print remains a significant example of the actor-print tradition, documenting the theatrical culture of the Edo period through a lens that prioritised individual characterisation over conventional beauty.
