A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Gigadō Ashiyuki, capturing the kabuki actor Ichikawa Ebijuro II in a dramatic stage pose.
This woodblock print by Gigadō Ashiyuki depicts the kabuki actor Ichikawa Ebijuro II in the role of Ude no Jirobei. Ashiyuki was a prominent figure in the Kamigata school of printmaking, which operated in the Osaka region during the early nineteenth century. Unlike the Edo school, which often focused on idealised beauty, the Kamigata artists frequently produced works that captured the specific physical presence and dramatic intensity of actors on the stage.
The composition focuses on the actor in a dynamic, crouched pose, a common convention in kabuki known as a mie. This pose serves to freeze a moment of high emotional tension for the audience. The actor wears a kimono featuring a bold, geometric blue and white check pattern, which contrasts with the muted, neutral background. His expression is one of focused concentration, typical of the character portrayals found in the theatrical prints of the period.
Ashiyuki uses clean, precise lines to define the actor's form and the folds of his costume. The colour palette is restrained, relying on the interplay between the blue pigments and the natural tone of the paper. The inclusion of calligraphy in the upper portion of the print identifies the actor and the character, providing context for the viewer. This print is a representative example of the yakusha-e genre, which functioned as both a souvenir for theatre-goers and a record of popular performances. The work reflects the technical skill of the Osaka printmakers, who maintained a distinct aesthetic identity separate from their contemporaries in Edo. The print captures the essence of the performance, focusing on the actor's posture and the graphic quality of his attire rather than environmental detail.
