A classic woodblock print by Hasegawa Sadanobu depicting two kabuki actors in their dramatic roles, capturing the theatrical energy of 19th-century Japan.
This woodblock print by Hasegawa Sadanobu depicts two prominent kabuki actors in their respective roles. The composition follows the yakusha-e tradition, which focuses on the portrayal of actors from the popular theatre of the Edo period. On the right, Ichikawa Ebizō V appears as the character Senso Dōjin. On the left, Jitsukawa Ensaburō is shown as the legendary hero Jiraiya.
Sadanobu, a significant figure in the Kamigata school of printmaking based in Osaka, captures the dramatic intensity of the stage. The actors are rendered with exaggerated facial expressions and bold, calligraphic lines that define their features and costumes. The use of colour is deliberate, with deep indigo backgrounds providing a contrast to the patterned garments and the pale skin tones of the figures. Each actor is framed by a cartouche containing their name and role, a standard convention in theatrical prints of this era.
The print reflects the cultural climate of 19th-century Japan, where kabuki theatre was a primary source of entertainment and fashion. The characters themselves, particularly Jiraiya, are rooted in folklore and popular literature, often associated with supernatural abilities and martial prowess. Sadanobu’s work provides a visual record of the performance styles and costume designs that defined the period. The technical execution demonstrates the precision of the woodblock medium, from the fine lines of the hair to the complex patterns on the robes. This piece offers a glimpse into the intersection of performance art and print culture, documenting the ephemeral nature of the stage through a permanent medium.
