This woodblock print by Utagawa Toyokuni I (1769-1825) captures a scene from the play *Shunkan futatsu omokage*. Toyokuni I was a prominent Japanese printmaker of the Ukiyo-e style, known particularly for his portraits of Kabuki actors. His work helped to define the late Edo period style of Ukiyo-e. He headed the Utagawa school for almost 30 years and trained many artists. The print depicts Ichikawa Komazō III in the role of Kameō, a blacksmith, alongside Iwai Kumesaburō as Oyasu, Kameō's wife. Kameō is shown hammering metal, while Oyasu offers him refreshment. The figures are rendered with careful attention to costume and pose, typical of Ukiyo-e actor prints. The composition is flat, with a focus on decorative patterns and clear outlines. The colour palette is restrained, using muted tones to create a sense of harmony. The print provides insight into the popular culture of the Edo period, specifically the theatrical world and its stars.
