A dynamic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Torii Kiyomasu depicting a dramatic Kabuki theatre scene with bold lines and theatrical energy.
This woodblock print by Torii Kiyomasu captures a dramatic scene from the Kabuki theatre, a genre known as yakusha-e. The composition depicts the actor Ichikawa Monnosuke, dressed in the attire of a courtesan, positioned below the explosive entrance of Nakajima Mioemon. Mioemon is shown mid-action, breaking through the wooden staves of a barrel, a trope often used in period performances to signal a sudden, high-energy arrival on stage.
Kiyomasu, a member of the Torii school, employed the bold, calligraphic line work that defined the early Ukiyo-e period. The figures are rendered with a sense of theatrical exaggeration, focusing on the expressive posture and the stylised features of the actors. The colour palette is restrained, relying on earthy tones and yellow hues typical of early hand-coloured or limited-palette prints. The lines are thick and assertive, reflecting the influence of the school's roots in creating signage for the Kabuki theatres of Edo.
This work provides insight into the performative culture of the Genroku era. The focus remains on the physical dynamism of the actors rather than realistic spatial depth. The flat composition allows the viewer to concentrate on the interaction between the two figures and the splintering wood, which serves as a framing device for the action. As a piece of theatrical documentation, it preserves the exaggerated gestures and costume details that defined the aesthetic of the early eighteenth-century stage. The print demonstrates the technical approach of the Torii artists, who prioritised the energy of the performance over anatomical precision, ensuring the actors were recognisable to their audience through specific crests and stylistic markers.
