A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunei, capturing the kabuki actor Ichikawa Monnosuke II in a formal, dramatic pose.
This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunei depicts the kabuki actor Ichikawa Monnosuke II in a formal role. Shunei, a student of Katsukawa Shunsho, became known for his yakusha-e, or actor prints, which captured the intensity of performers on the Edo stage. The artist focuses on the actor's facial expression and posture, conveying the gravity of the character through sharp, deliberate lines.
The subject wears a formal kimono adorned with geometric patterns, with two swords tucked into his sash, indicating his status as a samurai or lord. He holds a banner decorated with cloud motifs, a common prop in theatrical productions of the period. Above the figure, a branch of a flowering tree provides a subtle, naturalistic frame, balancing the rigid, vertical composition of the actor's stance. The print uses a limited palette, relying on the contrast between the deep red of the garments and the neutral tone of the paper to draw attention to the figure.
Katsukawa Shunei was active during the late eighteenth century, a period when the popularity of kabuki theatre drove the demand for prints that documented famous actors. His work is characterised by a departure from the more stylised, doll-like faces of his predecessors, moving instead toward a more individualised representation of the actors. This print is an example of his ability to distil the essence of a theatrical performance into a static, two-dimensional medium. The clean lines and clear composition reflect the technical precision of the Ukiyo-e tradition, where the collaborative process between artist, carver, and printer resulted in works of high clarity and graphic impact. This print offers a glimpse into the visual culture of Edo-period Japan, where the theatre and the print shop were closely linked.
