A delicate woodblock print from the Ichirō Picture Album by Yashima Gakutei, featuring a serene landscape with a waterfall and flowering trees.
This woodblock print originates from the Ichirō Picture Album (Ichirō gafu), a collection produced by the Japanese artist Yashima Gakutei. Gakutei was a prominent figure in the Ukiyo-e tradition, known for his work in the surimono style, which often featured high-quality paper and sophisticated printing techniques. This specific page displays a diptych composition, presenting a serene natural scene across two panels.
The left panel depicts a small bridge crossing a stream, leading towards a modest thatched structure nestled among trees. The right panel focuses on a vertical waterfall cascading down a hillside, framed by flowering trees. The artist employs a restrained palette, relying on soft pinks for the blossoms and muted greens for the foliage, which contrasts with the pale paper ground. The lines are precise and delicate, characteristic of the woodblock medium, allowing for clear definition of the terrain and the architectural elements.
As a student of Totoya Hokkei and influenced by Katsushika Hokusai, Gakutei brought a refined sensibility to his compositions. His work often reflects the literary and artistic interests of the Edo-period literati. The Ichirō gafu serves as a representative example of his ability to capture atmospheric qualities through simplified forms and balanced arrangements. The print demonstrates the technical precision of nineteenth-century Japanese printing, where the registration of colour blocks remains accurate despite the complexity of the design. This piece offers a view into the aesthetic preferences of the period, where nature and human presence are integrated with a sense of quietude. The composition avoids excessive detail, allowing the viewer to focus on the rhythmic repetition of the trees and the flow of the water.
