A woodblock print from the 1805 Illustrated Book of Filial Piety by Kitao Keisai Masayoshi, featuring rural scenes and traditional Japanese architecture.
This woodblock print originates from the Ehon Kōkyō, or Illustrated Book of Filial Piety, published in 1805. Kitao Keisai Masayoshi, a student of Kitao Shigemasa, was a prolific illustrator known for his refined approach to the Ukiyo-e tradition. This specific page demonstrates his ability to integrate narrative scenes with natural elements, a hallmark of his later work.
The composition is divided into two distinct panels, typical of the format found in Japanese illustrated books of the Edo period. The left panel depicts agricultural labour, showing figures working in fields alongside a water buffalo, with a stream and bamboo grove providing context. The right panel features a structure elevated above the clouds, suggesting a scene of moral or spiritual significance, while the foreground shows harvested crops drying in the sun. The line work is precise and economical, characteristic of Masayoshi's mature style, which moved away from the heavy ornamentation of earlier Ukiyo-e artists toward a more minimalist, calligraphic aesthetic.
Masayoshi was instrumental in the development of the 'ryakuga' or abbreviated drawing style, which sought to capture the essence of a subject with minimal strokes. This print reflects that philosophy, using simple lines to define the topography, the architecture, and the human figures. The work functions as both a moral instructional text and a visual record of rural life in Japan during the early 19th century. The balance between the mundane tasks of the farmers and the ethereal nature of the building above creates a visual dialogue between the earthly and the idealised. This print offers a clear example of the technical skill involved in Edo-period book production, where text and image were carefully arranged to guide the reader through the moral lessons of the Kōkyō.
