A woodblock print from the Nihon meibutsu gasan shū, featuring traditional Japanese figures and calligraphy in a classic Edo-period style.
This woodblock print originates from the Nihon meibutsu gasan shū, or Illustrated Collection of the Famous Products of Japan, a publication associated with the artist Katsushika Taito II. Taito II was a pupil of the master Hokusai, and his work reflects the stylistic conventions of the late Edo period. The print features a diptych format, common in Japanese book illustration, where text and image share the page to provide context for the subject matter.
The left panel depicts a seated figure in a traditional interior, positioned near a ceremonial display that includes a lobster, a symbol of longevity and prosperity. The right panel shows a standing figure viewed from behind, observing a garden or outdoor space through a doorway. The composition relies on clear, linear outlines and a restrained use of shading, which is characteristic of the monochrome printing techniques used in Japanese literature and instructional manuals of the era. The inclusion of calligraphic text serves as an integral part of the visual design, balancing the figures and architectural elements.
This work provides insight into the cultural practices and aesthetic preferences of the early nineteenth century. The figures are rendered with attention to the specific garments and postures of the time, while the surrounding objects suggest a domestic or ceremonial setting. As a piece of graphic art, it demonstrates the technical precision required for woodblock carving, where every stroke of the brush is translated into a relief surface. The print is a representative example of the collaborative nature of Japanese publishing, where artists, writers, and carvers worked together to produce accessible visual narratives for a broad audience. Its preservation offers a glimpse into the daily life and artistic output of the period, maintaining the clarity and balance typical of the school of Hokusai.
