A traditional Japanese triptych woodblock print depicting a group of women gathered around an ornate cart, rendered in the classic ukiyo-e style.
This triptych woodblock print by Utamaro II captures a scene of refined leisure, featuring a group of women gathered around an ornate cart. The composition is divided across three sheets, a common format for ukiyo-e artists to depict larger narrative scenes or expansive social gatherings. The figures are rendered with the elongated proportions and graceful postures characteristic of the period, their kimonos decorated with varied patterns that demonstrate the technical precision of the woodblock carving process.
Utamaro II, who assumed the name of his predecessor, continued the tradition of depicting bijin-ga, or pictures of beautiful women. In this work, the focus remains on the social interaction and the aesthetic presentation of the subjects. The cart serves as a structural anchor for the composition, providing a sense of depth and context to the arrangement of the figures. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft tones that have aged to a muted, paper-toned quality, which allows the line work to remain the primary focus. The artist employs calligraphic lines to define the folds of the fabric and the delicate features of the women, maintaining a balance between the decorative elements of the clothing and the naturalistic depiction of the human form. This print offers a glimpse into the fashion and social customs of the Edo period, presented through the lens of a traditional printmaker working within the established conventions of the school.
