Francis Picabia, a central figure in the Dada movement, produced this work during a period of stylistic transition. By the mid-1920s, Picabia had moved away from the mechanical drawings that defined his earlier output, shifting towards a more gestural and enigmatic form of abstraction. In Favor of Criticism displays this shift, presenting a composition that avoids direct representation in favour of symbolic, biomorphic forms.

The canvas features a central, crescent-like shape outlined in pale, luminous lines. Within this form, a jagged, angular line cuts through the space, creating a sense of tension against the surrounding dark, textured ground. To the right, a solitary, dark circular form provides a visual counterpoint, grounding the composition. The application of paint is thick and tactile, with a muted palette of earth tones, ochre, and deep brown, which gives the surface a weathered, organic quality.

Picabia often used titles to provoke or confuse his audience, and In Favor of Criticism is no exception. The title suggests a commentary on the reception of his work, yet the visual content remains resolutely non-objective. This piece reflects the artist's desire to dismantle traditional expectations of painting, prioritising intuition and spontaneity over narrative clarity.
