A double-sided study by American Impressionist Edward H. Potthast, capturing the movement and light of bathers at the seaside through expressive brushwork.
Edward H. Potthast is widely recognised for his depictions of leisure at the seaside, a subject he explored with frequency during the early twentieth century. This double-sided work captures the spontaneity of a day at the beach, reflecting the artist's interest in the interplay of light and movement upon the water. The recto side presents a figure seated on the sand, dressed in a yellow top and red hat, observing bathers in the surf. The composition relies on quick, gestural brushwork to convey the energy of the waves and the shifting figures in the water.
The verso side offers a more direct study of bathers, focusing on the tactile quality of the sea and the figures immersed within it. Potthast utilised a palette dominated by cool blues and greens, punctuated by the darker tones of the bathing costumes. His technique involves thick, impasto applications of paint, which provide a sense of texture to the foam and the surface of the ocean. These works demonstrate his ability to capture the fleeting nature of a summer afternoon without unnecessary detail.
Potthast spent much of his career in New York, where he became associated with the American Impressionist movement. His approach to the beach scene was less concerned with social commentary and more focused on the visual experience of light, colour, and human activity. By presenting both the recto and verso, this print offers a view into the artist's working process, showing how he experimented with different perspectives of the same subject. The loose handling of paint and the focus on atmospheric conditions are characteristic of his mature style, which prioritised the immediate visual impression over precise anatomical rendering.
