A satirical etching by George Cruikshank from 1818, depicting the chaotic and cramped conditions of a fashionable Regency-era social gathering.
George Cruikshank, a prolific illustrator and caricaturist of the nineteenth century, produced this etching in 1818. The work captures the absurdity of Regency-era social life, specifically the physical discomforts experienced by the upper classes during formal gatherings. The composition is packed with figures, reflecting the claustrophobic nature of the scene. Guests are squeezed into a narrow doorway, their elaborate costumes and oversized headgear creating a chaotic visual effect.
Cruikshank employs his characteristic style of exaggerated features and expressive gestures to mock the pretension of the period. The figures are rendered with sharp, biting lines, typical of his work for publishers like G. Humphrey. The hand-applied colour adds a layer of artifice to the scene, drawing attention to the garish fashion of the day. The central doorway acts as a bottleneck, forcing the guests into awkward, overlapping positions that emphasise the lack of space.
This print functions as a commentary on the rigid social codes of the time, where the desire to see and be seen often resulted in physical distress. The artist focuses on the ungainly movements of the attendees, from the man struggling to maintain his balance to the women whose gowns are crushed by the press of the crowd. By documenting these minor social failures, Cruikshank provides a glimpse into the realities behind the polished veneer of high society. The work remains a clear example of the satirical tradition in British art, where the artist uses humour to critique the habits of the elite. The etching is a fine specimen of early nineteenth-century graphic art, demonstrating the technical skill required to balance such a dense arrangement of figures while maintaining narrative clarity.
