A late work by Gustav Klimt, depicting an infant nestled within a mountain of colourful, patterned textiles.
Gustav Klimt painted this work, often referred to as Die Wiege (The Cradle), in 1917. It represents a departure from his earlier, gold-leafed allegorical works, showing a shift toward a more painterly and expressive application of colour. The composition focuses on a small infant, whose pale, delicate face emerges from a dense, mountainous pile of patterned textiles and blankets.
The painting is notable for its treatment of space and form. Rather than creating a traditional sense of depth, Klimt flattens the scene, treating the infant and the surrounding fabrics as a singular, unified surface of colour and pattern. The blankets are rendered with short, visible brushstrokes, creating a mosaic-like effect that obscures the physical structure of the cradle. This technique draws the eye across the canvas, encouraging the viewer to observe the interplay of blue, orange, and green pigments.
Klimt’s interest in decorative arts is evident here, as the fabrics are adorned with various motifs that echo the aesthetic of the Vienna Secession. The infant, positioned at the top of this colourful heap, provides a calm, human anchor to the surrounding visual complexity. The work remains unfinished in parts, particularly toward the lower edges, which offers a rare view into the artist's process and his method of building up a composition through layers of paint. This piece captures a domestic subject through the lens of modernism, prioritising the arrangement of colour and texture over realistic representation.
