A serene literati painting by Jin Nong, depicting a scholar enjoying wine and music beneath a blossoming plum tree.
Jin Nong, a central figure among the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou, produced this work during the mid-Qing dynasty. The composition depicts a scholar seated in quiet contemplation beneath a flowering plum branch. The figure holds a small cup, suggesting a moment of solitary reflection or poetic inspiration. Beside him rests a qin, a traditional stringed instrument, and a vessel for heating wine. These elements signify the refined pursuits of the literati class.
The artist employs a restrained palette, using light washes of colour to complement the fluid ink lines. The plum blossoms, rendered with delicate touches of pigment, provide a subtle contrast to the monochrome ink of the branches and the scholar's robes. The negative space across the paper creates a sense of openness, allowing the viewer to focus on the stillness of the scene. Calligraphic inscriptions in the upper left corner balance the visual weight of the overhanging branch, a common technique in traditional Chinese painting to integrate text and image.
Jin Nong was known for his unconventional approach to brushwork and his mastery of clerical script. His style often departed from the rigid academic standards of his time, favouring a more personal and expressive execution. This piece reflects the idealised life of a scholar-official, removed from the pressures of public service and engaged with nature and the arts. The work demonstrates the economy of means often found in his later career, where every stroke serves a specific purpose in defining form and mood. The paper shows signs of age, which adds to the character of the piece, grounding it in its historical context as a relic of the eighteenth-century Chinese art world.
