A refined surimono woodblock print by Totoya Hokkei, depicting figures on a boat near the Tosa coast under a moonlit sky.
This woodblock print by Totoya Hokkei depicts a scene set upon the Inland Sea near Tosa. As a prominent student of Katsushika Hokusai, Hokkei became a master of the surimono format, which were privately commissioned prints often distributed among poetry circles. These works are characterised by their high production quality, frequently incorporating metallic pigments and embossing techniques that distinguish them from mass-produced commercial prints of the period.
The composition focuses on a large, ornate boat carrying several figures in traditional attire. The prow of the vessel dominates the left side of the frame, its curved structure leading the eye toward the figures seated on the deck. Beyond the boat, the sea stretches toward a distant, rugged coastline under a pale sky. A circular moon hangs in the upper left, providing a sense of quietude to the maritime scene. The inclusion of calligraphic text at the top indicates the print's association with a specific poetic gathering or commission, a common practice for surimono.
Hokkei employs a balanced colour palette, using soft blues for the water and muted earth tones for the landmasses. The lines are precise and controlled, reflecting the technical skill required for the intricate carving of the woodblocks. The perspective is flattened, typical of the Ukiyo-e tradition, which prioritises decorative arrangement over strict spatial realism. This print offers a glimpse into the refined aesthetic preferences of the Japanese literati during the Edo period, where art, literature, and nature were closely intertwined in the daily lives of the urban elite.
