A lithograph by René Janssens depicting a quiet, lamp-lit interior scene with an armchair, rendered in soft, atmospheric tones.
René Janssens, a Belgian artist active during the turn of the twentieth century, frequently explored the quietude of domestic spaces. This lithograph, titled Interieur met leunstoel, bij lamplicht, captures a solitary room bathed in the soft, directional glow of a table lamp. The composition focuses on a single armchair positioned near a door, creating a sense of stillness and private contemplation.
Janssens employs a dense, stippled technique to build form and shadow. The light source originates from the lamp, casting long, soft shadows across the floor and walls. This treatment of light creates a moody atmosphere, characteristic of the Symbolist interest in the psychological weight of everyday objects. The furniture, including the armchair and the cabinet visible on the left, is rendered with attention to texture and volume, grounding the scene in a tangible reality. The framed pictures on the wall and the small bouquet of flowers add personal detail to the space, suggesting a lived-in environment.
Technically, the work relies on the subtle gradation of tone achievable through lithography. By layering ink, Janssens achieves a depth that mimics the dim lighting of an evening interior. The arch of the door and the patterned curtains provide a structural frame for the scene, drawing the eye toward the illuminated area where the chair sits. This print offers a glimpse into the domestic aesthetic of the period, where the home was often viewed as a sanctuary from the outside world. It is a study in light and shadow, demonstrating the artist's ability to imbue a simple room with a distinct, quiet character.
