A technical design drawing by Pieter Jansz. Post for the interior decoration of a state yacht, featuring gilded garlands and classical motifs.
This drawing by the Dutch architect and painter Pieter Jansz. Post depicts a design for the interior decoration of a state yacht. Post, known for his contributions to Dutch classicism, provides a precise technical view of a wall section intended for a vessel of high status. The composition focuses on the ornamental treatment of the panelling, featuring gilded garlands and carved figures that reflect the aesthetic preferences of the mid-seventeenth century.
The drawing employs a combination of ink lines and subtle watercolour washes to define the three-dimensional quality of the carvings. The upper section displays a series of vertical panels separated by caryatid-like figures, while the lower portion is dominated by a fluid, horizontal arrangement of swags and floral motifs. The inclusion of handwritten annotations at the top of the sheet suggests this was a working document, intended for the craftsmen responsible for the execution of the ship's interior.
As an architect, Post was frequently involved in the design of both buildings and their internal fittings. His work on maritime interiors demonstrates the application of classical architectural principles to the confined spaces of a yacht. The balance between the structural panelling and the decorative elements shows a clear understanding of proportion and ornamentation. The use of gold leaf, implied by the yellow wash, would have provided a sense of luxury appropriate for a state vessel. This study offers a view into the collaborative process between architect and artisan during the Dutch Golden Age, capturing the meticulous planning required for high-end decorative commissions of the period.
