A classic Ukiyo-e triptych by Chōkōsai Eishō, depicting three elegant courtesans in the Ōgiya house against a decorative peacock screen.
This triptych by Chōkōsai Eishō depicts a scene within the Ōgiya, a renowned brothel in the Yoshiwara pleasure district of Edo. Eishō, a student of Hosoda Eishi, specialised in the bijin-ga genre, which focuses on the depiction of beautiful women. The composition features three courtesans arranged across the three panels, their figures rendered with the elongated proportions characteristic of the artist's style during the 1790s.
The background is dominated by a large, decorative screen featuring a peacock with an expansive, detailed tail. This motif serves as a visual anchor, providing a contrast to the more restrained, linear forms of the women in the foreground. The courtesans are dressed in elaborate kimonos, each displaying distinct patterns and colour palettes that suggest their status and the fashion of the period. Their postures are relaxed, suggesting a moment of leisure or private conversation within the interior space.
Technically, the print demonstrates the refined use of woodblock printing techniques common to the late eighteenth century. The lines are precise, defining the folds of the fabric and the delicate features of the subjects. The colour palette is balanced, utilising muted tones for the kimonos against the warmer, golden hues of the screen. This work provides a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the Edo period, where the lives of courtesans were frequently documented by artists for a public audience. The print captures the intersection of fashion, art, and the social structures of the pleasure quarters, presented through the lens of Eishō's particular stylistic approach to figure drawing.
