A bold, modernist interior scene by Henri Matisse, featuring a black fern and contrasting patterns in red, yellow, and green.
Henri Matisse painted Interior with Black Fern in 1948, a period during which he focused on the decorative potential of colour and flattened perspective. The composition presents a domestic scene, yet the artist prioritises the arrangement of shapes and patterns over realistic spatial depth. A large, dark fern sits in a blue and white patterned pot upon a circular green table. Beside the plant, a small dish holds yellow fruit, while a dark vessel occupies the foreground. To the left, a figure sits in a striped chair, rendered with minimal detail.
The background is divided into two distinct zones. A bright red wall with a grid pattern dominates the upper portion, while the lower section features a yellow surface covered in dense, dark spots. This juxtaposition of contrasting colours and textures is characteristic of Matisse's later work, where he moved away from traditional modelling to embrace bold, graphic forms. The black fern acts as a strong silhouette against the red wall, creating a sense of graphic tension.
Matisse often returned to the theme of the interior throughout his career, using his studio or home as a stage for his experiments with light and colour. In this work, the objects are not merely items in a room, but components of a carefully balanced visual puzzle. The lack of traditional shadows and the use of flat colour planes demonstrate his interest in the decorative arts and his move toward the simplified, cut-out aesthetic he would explore in his final years. The work remains a clear example of his ability to transform mundane domesticity into a highly structured, visual experience through the application of pure, unmodulated colour.
