Patrick Heron was a central figure in the development of British abstract art during the mid-twentieth century. Associated with the St Ives School, his work often explores the interaction of colour and form on a flat plane. This screenprint, produced in 1970, demonstrates his characteristic approach to non-representational composition. The image relies on the spatial tension created between large, irregular shapes and the surrounding field of deep green.

Heron believed that colour possessed its own energy and spatial depth. By placing high-chroma shapes against a dark, recessive background, he forces the viewer to perceive the forms as shifting forward or receding into the surface.
